Cal Berkeley professor Robert Reich claims that “the poorest families pay more of their incomes in taxes than the richest households” in “34 states,” and “we have a tax system that is literally designed to keep the rich rich, while keeping the poor poor.”
IN FACT, Reich’s stats are based on a deceitful study that excludes large portions of poor families’ income, greatly overstating their tax rates. Federal taxes are 68% of all taxes, and federal tax rates are far higher on the wealthy, belying Reich’s rhetoric:
