Disputing Republicans who say that the Child Tax Credit gives taxpayer money to illegal immigrants, Republican Congressman Jason Smith claims that “citizens must have a Social Security number” to “claim the Child Tax Credit.”
IN FACT, federal law allows illegal immigrants to claim the Child Tax Credit for all children who are U.S. citizens. And 88% of their children are U.S. citizens because they receive birthright citizenship under a misreading of the Constitution.
