Among the 9.2 million people who were receiving Social Security disability payments in December 2021, 35% obtained these benefits for mental disorders, 30% for diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and 3% for injuries. From 1965 to 2022, the U.S. population grew by 65%, while the number of people receiving disability benefits grew by 408%.
