Question of the Day

Guns & Suicide

Do attempted suicides with firearms have a higher death rate than the average for all suicide attempts?

Correct Answer

Tell Me More

During 2007 to 2014, 8% of all suicide attempts were fatal, while 90% of attempted suicides with firearms were fatal. This may be in part or whole because people who use guns for suicide attempts are serious about taking their lives and aren't merely crying out for help. In 2005, the National Academy of Sciences published research which found that (1) nongun owners are at a 0.007% risk of suicide in a given year, (2) gun owners are at a 0.015% risk, (3) it is unknown whether gun ownership can be causally linked to the increased risk of suicide for gun owners, and (4) "some gun control policies may reduce the number of gun suicides, but they have not yet been shown to reduce the overall risk of suicide in any population."
